July 16th, 2010 - For months now, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is being fought tirelessly by a veritable armada of fishing boats and armies of volunteers working round the clock to do what is humanly possible to protect their environment and livelihood. However, the amounts of oil threatening these shores are simply unimaginable, and this threat will continue for many years.
What is desperately and quickly needed is a long-term sustainable solution to ensure that the oil is prevented from reaching the coastline that such operations work on a large scale with simple, relatively low cost but effective technologies which will work also under adverse weather conditions.
This technology is available right NOW:
A single Unit of the FUTURA-SOS-SYSTEM ("Sea state independent Oil skimming System") is capable of clean more than 250 million gallons of seawater per day and can be deployed almost immediately:
“A FUTURA-SOS-System built up from converted barges and a chartered coastal tank ship can start oil spill fighting in the Gulf of Mexico in less than 20 days from the start of the project”, said Udo G. Wulf, Managing Director of FUTURA-SHIPS GmbH.
The skimming concept is based on purely hydrodynamic principles, which are at the heart of a technology that works without any moving parts and is therefore extremely robust even under adverse and harsh operating conditions.
Professor Jeffrey R. Idle ,PhD, (Charles´ University, Prague and University of Bern) says about the FUTURA-SOS-SYSTEM:
“From a scientific standpoint I am impressed by the simplicity and effectiveness of this potential solution. The collected oil may also be reused”.
